Why Did God Rest?

1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. (Genesis 2:1-3)

Have you ever wondered why God rested on the seventh day? When I was younger, that question bothered me… I mean, He’s God… He doesn’t NEED to rest, right? I have recently come to perhaps a better understanding of this (other than the one that I always heard… “He rested on the seventh day so that we would know to observe a Sabbath”)… I think that God was being an example for us in how we should act after creating. God created us and also, in turn, wants us to create whether that is through reproducing or through artistic endeavors. In every case of creation that we are involved in, we should (like God) rest. At the end of labor and delivery, for example, a new mother rests. I find myself at the end of a long and intense creative project and the only thing that makes sense right now is rest. I’m glad that God has created me in His image!

By the way, the picture above is from a man in our church named Jim Baker. He has some outstanding pictures in his Flickr gallery… click the pic to visit him and leave him a comment or two about his photos.
