YULE Just Have To Wait…

In case anyone has not noticed lately, Christmas is now in full swing. For anyone who has ever been in ministry (and particularly in music ministry) this is the busiest and craziest time of the year… are we overdoing things? I understand it’s a BIG deal to celebrate Christ’s birth… but the first celebration of it was rather subdued and perhaps more genuine. I don’t know if feeling like you are at your wit’s end so that people will “feel like Christmas actually happened” (huge musical productions beyond the capabilities of your church membership) is really what the celebration should entail. Maybe it’s just me… in the meantime, for those of you who visit regularly and comment very irregularly, :) you will just have to wait until I can breathe again for a well-thought out posting.

How good are your listening skills? Can you tell the difference?

Check out this really cool little aural exam… it should take you about six minutes… Word of warning – it’s not the easiest thing in the world!

Just FYI… I scored an 86.1% – not completely satisfied with that, but hey… I’m getting older, right?

Because I Have to Be at Work Early to Light and Heat the Earth…

I occasionally need a good smile… who doesn’t, right? Well, it had been a very long time since I had CONSISTENTLY gotten a good grin out of a commercial every time I watched it… then came the Jimmy Dean commercials featuring the Sunshine.

These commercials are, in my opinion, some of the most clever ideas for advertising… remember the Jimmy Dean commercials of yore? They pretty much centered around a southern-style breakfast table and focused only on the food itself… whereas these commercials are humorously reminding us that we should eat breakfast even in our rushed lives (and, of course, that Jimmy Dean offers many quick options). Seems to be better advertising to me. The music is also fun and whimsical (though it smacks of Jon Brion’s score to the film Punch-Drunk Love). If you haven’t seen these commercials yet, sit back and enjoy a good smile… if you have seen one, check yourself the next time you watch one… are you grinning? Thanks, Jimmy Dean, for adding a little sunshine to the world!

When the Coast Is Clear
I have finally posted a new song (finding the time to write, rewrite, and then home-record a song in between a job in ministry seems to be tougher than I imagined)! Take a listen and please comment… it’s much more encouraging to know people are reading and listening by reading your comments than to just see from the high amount of traffic that I get from each of you that you do actually care to read/listen. Let me know if I am wasting my time or not… :)

Did Things Really Change That Much in One Week?!!
One week ago, President Bush claimed that he expected Donald Rumsfeld to still be in his position at the end of his presidency in January 2009. He stated that “Both men are doing fantastic jobs and I strongly support them.” Interestingly, he said the same thing about his expectations for Dick Cheney to remain in his position both then and also in today’s press conference. Was he lying then? Is he lying now? Or did something change (an election, perhaps)?
One week ago, Kevin Federline (K-Fed, mooch, idiot, whatever you want to call him) was claiming that his marriage was “solid” and that he and Britney were focused on their family and careers. Was he lying then? Was he oblivious to the fact that his marriage was far from “solid?”Perhaps we have come to a place in society when it is acceptable (even expected?) to flat-out lie about one’s intentions and plans until the time comes when the intentions and/or plans come to fruition. This goes on all the time in church work as well (unfortunately). Even ministers seem to lie to one another about their plans (often indicating that God has or has not revealed the path for them to follow). When a minister is honest about his plans or even his struggles, he probably will not have much time left for effective ministry in his church. Let’s face it, most people don’t want honesty! They want the quick answer…How are you today? Fine or doing pretty good are the correct and expected answers. No one wants to hear that your big toe is “killing you” and that your sister is having surgery to repair cosmetic scarring from the time you accidentally hit her with a shovel in the backyard and that you are pretty sure that your cat has a urinary tract infection. You are supposed to just respond that everything is okay. We don’t want honesty… and that’s a pretty sad place to be. So, here’s my deal… you can be honest with me. I WILL listen even when I don’t want to. HONESTLY!

This American Life

One of my favorite shows on NPR is This American Life. Hosted by the nasal-toned yet intriguing Ira Glass (second-cousin of the minimalist composer/film-scorer, Philip Glass… nice guy, by the way), the show is quite different from anything else that I have ever heard on the radio. Well, I have recently had the pleasure of discovering that they have a podcast available for free download through iTunes or through their own website and I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to take my “radio” programming with me. Anyway, this year’s Halloween edition of This American Life was quite entertaining. If you listen to it for no other reason, you should listen to the very first story (less than ten minutes) as it is about a TRUE haunted house and has a TRUE explanation for its haunts! Plus… it is very entertaining!
